Megan and Shannon Kurashige, sisters and co-directors of Sharp & Fine, have programmed Soundwave 9’s Just Ahead is Darkness, a work inspired by the tradition of bon dances in Hawaii.

Megan performs with Liss Fain Dance and has previously worked with Alex Ketley (The Foundry), Christian Burns (burnsWORK), Ballet Pacifica, and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal. She studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance under the direction of Summer Lee Rhatigan. She is also a writer and her fiction appears in various magazines and anthologies.

Shannon performs with Liss Fain Dance and has previously worked with Christian Burns and Alex Ketley. She graduated from UC Irvine with a BFA in Dance Performance and a minor in biology and received extensive training at North Carolina School of the Arts and the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance. She is also an artist and designer.

Together, they facilitate choreographic work that grows out of a shared history of experience in both classical ballet and contemporary dance and a desire for deep collaboration with artists from different disciplines. They create narrative performance work that brings together physically exuberant choreography, emotionally nuanced text, live music, and multi-disciplinary collaboration. Their work is informed by the technical rigor of classical ballet, the human intensity of contemporary forms, and the conviction that telling a story built on personal truths is a powerful and communal act of communication and empathy.
